When you do your flight booking you have to be very aware of the time that you travel. Since this was our first flight with baby we opted for the 11am flight.

It helps to leave to the airport at least 2 hours before your flight as there is a lot more adjustment and needs for your new family. Allocate time for using the toilet, changing baby or eating if you need to. I used a little book file to keep baby's birth certificate as well as our ID documents as it makes it easier to access when you travel. We checked in online and got our seats already. We just had the bag drop off to do.

We were blessed to have my Mum travel with us for baby's first flight. We said our goodbyes to our family and proceeded to the boarding gate. Once in we headed to board our flight. We travelled with a pram, diaper bag, my handbag as well as feeding pillow. So many items for a 2 hour flight but it all helped. The pram actually gets tagged at the check in counter and before you get on the plane the airline staff take it away to another storage area. Make sure you empty the pram of everything you need first.

Also change baby before you get on the plane. The air hostess usually explains all the safety points to you individually. As baby did not use a pacifier I was incredibly stressed as to how he would cope with the ear pressure on the flight. I positioned him on the feeding pillow and offered him a feed while taking off as the sucking action helps to control ear pressure.

Thank God he coped well and did not even cry. It felt like a long flight but we all coped and were so relieved that we made it!

For the descent we also had to get baby to feed to get the sucking action, luckily he did cope.

We disembarked and got our pram as we exited the plane so that really helped. Collected our luggage and then changed baby.

We got an Uber and headed to our new place of residence to start our new life here in Cape Town, the Mother City.
